Wriggler-Rattler Snake

Make one of these realistic wriggling snakes - you won’t be able to stop fooling around with it!
You will need:
- Loo roll tubes
- Scissors
- Split pins or paper fasteners
- Paint
- Sticky tape
- Thin card
- Rice or lentils
Cut six loo roll tubes in half, across the middle.
This should give you twelve pieces.
Next, cut four triangles into each piece of loo roll tube.
First, snip a little triangle in from the edge. Do it so that the point of the triangle goes almost to the middle.
Now turn the tube and cut another triangle opposite.
Again, the point should go almost to the middle.
Then cut two more triangles on the other side of the tube… |
…so that you end up with something that looks like this.
This is one segment of your snake’s body.
Repeat this process on all twelve loo roll tube pieces. |
When you’ve cut triangles into them all, paint the inside of the snake sections.
It’s a good idea to do this now, because it’s much more fiddly to try to do it later on!
Now you need to join all the segments of the snake’s body together.
To do this, you need lots of these - split pins, or paper fasteners!
On each segment, pop little holes into the bits of tube in between each of the triangles.
Use a ball of soft modelling clay and a sharp pencil to do this.
Each segment will need four holes. Two on one side… |
When they’re done, you can join the segments together, using the split pins or paper fasteners.
Start with two segments overlapping, so that the holes line up.
Push a split pin through one set of holes, and open it up on the inside of the body. |
Repeat the process on the other side.
Pop a split pin through, and open it up inside. It can be a bit fiddly, but it gets easier with practice.
When they’re joined, the segments will flex.
The idea is to join all the segments in this way.
Once they’re all joined, you’ll have a snake body that looks like this. |
Now you can make a rattling tail - from rice, or lentils! |
Roll some thin card into a long, thin cone shape. |
Trim the bottom until the cone fits snugly into the end of the snake’s body. |
Pop rice or lentils inside the cone. |
Put sticky tape over the open end of the cone, so that the contents don’t fall out. |
Tape the cone to the end of the body, to finish the rattle off. |
Now for the head.
This is made by cutting two identical heart shapes, like these, from thin card.
Take one of the heart shaped pieces of card, and fold the top around the snake’s body.
This will be the bottom jaw.
Now fold the other heart shape, around the top of the snake’s body, to make the top of the head.
Tape it into place.
It should overlap the bottom jaw slightly, like this. |
When that’s done, the snake’s body is complete! |
You can paint your snake whichever way you like.
This one even has a forked tongue made from an old scrap of red paper.
And remember, you can make any species you like… |
…and any size you like - providing you have enough loo roll tubes!
Try it yourself!
